Structuration theory attempts to understand human social behaviour by resolvig the competing viewsof structure-agency & macro- micro perspective. This is achieved by studying the processes that take place at the interface between the actor and the structure. The work of the contemporary British sociologist Anthony Giddens, and in particular his structuration theory, has been widely cited by Information Systems researchers. This paper presents a critical review of the work of Giddens and its application in the Information Systems field. Following a brief overview of Giddens's work as a whole, some key Anthony Giddens's theory of structuration appears to have been the outcome of a series of critical confrontations with other prevailing themes in social theory This review essay outlines Giddens's Giddens' theory of structuration explores the question of whether it is individuals or social forces that shape our social reality. He eschews extreme positions, arguing that although people are not entirely free to choose their own actions and their knowledge is limited, they nonetheless are the agency which reproduces the social structure and leads to social change. Introduction Anthony Giddens’ (1984) structuration theory has an obvious appeal for strategy-as-practice researchers.

Structuration Theory developed by Anthony Giddens, a British sociologist, in response to claims by post-structuralism, holds that the structures that humans find themselves in are determined for them, and volunteerism, that suggests that humans are completely free to create their lived environment.
In his book, Central Problems in Social Theory (1979), Giddens has defined structuration. This chapter presents Anthony Giddens’ proposal to reconcile the opposition between structure and agency. His structuration theory proposes to see structure and agency as mutually constitutive, as a duality: as inseparable as the two sides of a coin.

The last of the action theory perspectives of Chapter 4 is structuration theory – the theory developed by Anthony Giddens to explain and integrate agency and structure. In a series of theoretical works stretching from the mid-1970s, Anthony Giddens (e.g., 1984) has developed the most sophisticated generally available theory of social structure, usually advanced under the banner of the theory of ‘structuration’.
Anthony Giddens was born on January 8, 1938. He is a British sociologist who is known for his theory of structuration and his holistic view of modern societies. Anthony Giddens has been in the forefront of developments in social theory for the past decade. In The Constitution of Society he outlines the distinctive position he has evolved during that period and offers a full statement of a major new perspective in social thought, a synthesis and elaboration of ideas touched on in previous works but described here for the first time in an integrated and B.
